Butter rice

My daughter with few of her girl friends plan to have potluck party at school on every Thu, everyone need to bring one type of food from home and they will share among them. My daugter requested me to cook "butter rice" for today's party...

Butter rice

Normally I will just use the overnight rice and stir fry with butter and eggs. Since this is the last minutes request, so I adapted Wendy's garlic rice recipe which her recipe is easy and simple, the difference from her recipe is I added with more butter. Thanks to Wendy for kind sharing !!

Butter rice

Butter rice
(source: adapted from Wendy's Table for 2 ..or more, with minor changes)

Ingredients
3 cups Basmati rice, washed and drained
5-6 cups water, adjust accordingly
5 cloves garlic, finely chopped
40g butter
1 and 1/4tsp salt or to taste
A pinch of turmeric powder, for colouring purposes only (optional)
3tbsp grated carrot (I will add more next time)

Method
1. Mix all ingredients in a rice cooker and cook.
2. Fluff rice with chopsticks before serving.

Happy Cooking !!

  1. Hi,

If we substitute Basmati rice with normal white rice, would the taste still be the same?

What side dishes would compliment with butter rice?

  6. RO, yes, you can subsitute with normal white rice, I did it some time when i run out of basmati rice, the taste will have slight difference. The side dish to accompany with this butter rice is curry or rendang..

    Mas and Moon, Thanks.

cikmanggis, ya, good choice to have it with Rendang.

  27. Do I need to melt the butter first? Or do I simply cut into cubes and add to the uncooked rice?

  28. I wonder what makes you think lemak means butter. Nasi lemak(malay) means rice with milk (in most case is coconut milk). It is added with pandan(screwpine) leaves to enhance its fragrance.
