Sweet and Sour Pork 咕嚕肉

Gu Lao Rou a.k.a Sweet and sour Pork a classic Chinese dish. Every Chinese mother have their own version. This is my version of sweet and sour pork. Personally i prefer to use pork belly for this dish, more tender and nice taste of fat after deep fried, yum yum. Also try not to omit pineapple in this recipe too, it give fruity sweet and add colour to this dish.

An easy recipe, just make sure you ready all ingredients before cooking, including the sweet and sour sauce. You can adjust the taste of the sauce while cooking, everyone has difference taste buds.

Sweet and Sour Pork 咕嚕肉

300g pork belly, cut into bite-sized pieces
1tsp light soy sauce
1/4tsp salt

50g red bell pepper, cut into pieces
50g green bell pepper, cut into pieces (can be replaced with cucumber)
80g fresh pineapple, cut into pieces
35g onion, cut into pieces
2 slices of ginger

Sweet and sour sauces
50g tomato ketchup
20g sugar
10g white vinegar
10g sweet chili sauce
1tsp oyster sauce
1/2tsp salt
1/4cup water

Cornstarch, for deep frying pork
Oil for frying

  1. Marinate pork belly pieces with light soy sauce and salt for at least 30mins.
  2. Mix all ingredients for sweet and sour sauces in a mixing bowl, set aside.
  3. Coat marinated pork pieces with cornstarch. Deep fry in hot oil over medium low heat till cooked and slightly brown. Return all fried pork into hot oil and fry it over high heat for less than a minute until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Remain 1tbsp of oil in the wok, sauté onion and ginger till aroma.
  5. Add in red bell pepper, green bell pepper and pineapples, mix well.
  6. Pour in sweet and sour sauces, bring to boil.
  7. Add in fried pork and continue stirring till sauce thickens and all ingredients well coated with the sauces.
  8. Dish out and serve hot or warm with steamed rice.
