Stir fried chayote and beef

School holidays has been started, and I know i will have less time to update my blog and sorry for not often visit your blog during this period. You know, i just can't concentrate and sitting down there doing my own things, my kids just have too many requests...
Ya, back to dish that I going to post here, i saw this dish in a TV food show, a Vietnamese way of stir fry chayote. We like this dish, the chayote tasted sweet and crunchy, simply delicious.

This is chayote. And the chayote's shoot also nice to just stir fry with anchovies, see my ealier post here. You can get both chayote and chayote shoot from Jusco store.

This is Szechuan pepercorn, replaced with black peppercorn if you can't find this.

Stir fried chayote and beef

1 medium chayote ( about 350g), remove skin and seed, sliced thinly
200g beef, sliced thinly
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1/2tsp Szechuan peppercorn
1 sprig spring onion, cut 1” length

1tbsp fish sauce
1tsp sugar
1/2tsp salt or to taste

Method
1. Marinate beef with fish sauce and sugar for 1hour.
2. Heat oil in a non-stick pan, quickly stir fry beef till color changed, not more than 1min. Set aside.
3. Heat little oil in a clean wok, sauté garlic till fragrant, add Szechuan peppercorn and chayote slices, cook for 2-3 mins, add little water if too dry.
4. Return beef to the wok, quickly mix well with chayote, add spring onion, seasoning with salt.
5. Dish out and serve hot.

I've never tried cooking with chayote, should do so now. I would prefer black peppercorns, never fancy those sichuan peppercorns. Can't tolerate the numbness effect in my mouth!!

You know in Southern US a chayote is called a Mirliton. I will have to try this.

It's difficult to look for Szechuan peppercorn here! Hopefully, I'll be able get some! Your stir fried beef look simply wonderful. Ya, the school holiday already started. As for us, we've no difference! haha....

I love chayote or Sousou as we called them in S.Africa. They seem to have many names! They grew so well in our garden there and I learnt to cook them so many ways. Even my dogs loved them! We had so many!! I am going to try and grow them again when we make the final move to France as I have seen them there on the odd occasion. Diane

Your chayote looks so delicious. Never cook it with beef before; I'll try out this later. I'm also a fan of chayote cause its can be cooked in many different ways... it’s grow abundantly in my hometown.

Maybe I should give Chayote a try, never dare to buy it but I always seen Tigerfish cooked this.

yes I like chayote too it's crispy and crunchy when stir fry!! hmmm ...interesting to use peppercorn ...must try your method too!! the chayote here are relatively cheap and we get buy anywhere at any time.....maybe I should get one tomorrow..

I have seen chayote a bunch of times especially at the Mexican groceries but have never tried cooking with it; this is a great dish and easy to make!
