Today I would like to share with you this local fried donut, Kueh Keria (fried sweet potato donut), this is a type of donut that you can easily get it from pasar (local market). I can get every cheap RM 1.00 (USD 0.30) for 3pcs from Malay stalls, thus all this while, I don't bother to make this kueh by myself. But recently I just made this kueh few times due to my kids just love to eat this kueh.
My kids especially like to eat the sugar coat on this Kueh Keria ...kids just like sweet..
Kueh Keria / Fried sweet potato donut
*makes 11 pcs
(printable recipe)
Ingredients
250g sweet potato, cooked and mashed
50g all purpose flour
15g glutinous rice flour
A pinch of salt
1tbsp water or adjust accordingly ( it depend on the type of sweet potato you use)
Method
1. Combine all ingredients and knead till smooth dough.
2. Weight dough 30g each and shape it into small ball.
3. Flatten the ball, made a hole in the middle of the dough, and shape it like a donut shape (don’t need to use donut cutter).
4. Heat oil in a wok, deep fry sweet potato ring over medium flame till golden brown. Dish out and drain.
To coat Kueh Keria:-
1. In another clean pot, cook 1/3 cup sugar and 2tbsp water until syrupy and thick. Add fried sweet potato ring and coat well.
2. Serve warm with a cup of tea or coffee
My note: The above flour and water ingredients just for your reference only, this is because difference type of sweet potato get difference texture of dough, you need to adjust the flour and water accordingly. Sometime I don’t need to add water but have to add more flour instead, personally I prefer local type of sweet potato.
Happy Cooking !!

Oh Sonia, I'm sure this would be my boys favorite. Kids just love sweet sweet thing.
Gosh, my Hubby loves this alot! We used to buy it from a stall near 7-11 Southern Park. Unfortunately the stall was not open when we went there few times during hubby's last break. So sad..! U made it so perfect Sonia! Envy U!!! :D
Sonia, I lIke this Malay dougnut very much. I still remember my primary school canteen stall sold very nice one. I had it almost everyday. :(
Too bad I can't find any good one here. I think I should try to do it one of these day.
Thanks for sharing.
Oh, nobody can resist the homemade doughnuts. Yum!!
Sedap! Nothing like home-made kueh keria. It's so difficult to get good ones with more sweet potatoes instead of flour.
Kids would definitely love this! Sweet potatoes will make a more spongy bite, I believe?
Made this last year and love it. :) Crunchy & sweet and creamy on the inside. ;0
Oh gosh, looks absolutely delicious..sure its soft...absolutely new innovative donuts, love it.:)

Ahhhh, my favourite local donut! Beat the imported ones anytime!
ooohhh, I love these, sweet potatoes are my favorite, every way it is prepared, and your sugar syrup, I can just lick them. Thank you for sharing and making me want to have now, lol.
yes, I always see this at Malay stall, but doubt to try one because I don't know what is that...next time I will try it and make my own if I like it! thanks for sharing!
I too made this the other day but it didn't taste good at all. The sweet potatoes here are very watery so I keep adding flour to it so the kuih keria turn out really hard and chewy. I wish I can have yours. They look so good.
Oh these look so delicious! The sugar glaze looks so good!
The donuts look gorgeous and very delicious!
These are so heavenly! My mouth is watering like crazy! Wish I had one...or two...
I have never made sweet potato donuts. They look delicious. I just added another recipe to my must try list. I hope you are having a great day. Blessings ...Mary
I prefer Indonesian sweet potatoes. They are longish and slim, compared to local ones that are fat. Indonesian ones are less wet and more orangy. When I make pau with Indonesian ones they give me orange pau, but local ones will only look yellow.
This is a sweet but addictive kuih, very dangerous to eat, can't stop!!!!
looks yummy and with the sugar coating, most kids will love it
This is one of my favourite, made this before (without the sugar glaze) and they were delicious, guess I wanna buy some sweet potato and make some again.
That looks delicious Sonia! :) I've tried something similar but it was more glazed. I think this looks really good as the sweet potato would add some nice moistness! :D
Sonia, this is one of my faves from the Malay, too! You're such a lovely mom to whip these up for your kids. =)
Wow...my favourite! I made that before. I have to make again. They are so delicious and healthier than the normal doughnuts. I would love to try your recipe. Thanks very much for sharing.
