I have never eaten the real Candy Haws(Tanhulu)冰糖葫芦 (A snack food popular in China that is made from sugar coated haws, yam or other fruit skewered on a bamboo stick; similar to candied apples, also 糖葫芦) in China before. Last week, i got a chance to try it at the "Beijing street Setia Alam" show organized by the house developer at my place.
The candy haws that i tried was not using the real fruit which is Haw (we can't find this fruit here) but instead they use cherry tomatoes and grapes. The taste was incredible, first bite is a very crispy sugar coated skin and followed by sour juices burst from the cherry tomato, that was really YUMMY!
I am very thick skin and asked for the recipe from that guy preparing this candy, but i have no luck ^_^ .. Anyway, I managed to find a good video showing how to prepare this candy and immediate i try this at home.
1. prepare fruits on the bamboo sticks.
2. Cook sugar and water, Do Not try to stir the sugar!
3. Big bubbles generated over high heat
4. Light golden colour and small bubbles appears and it is ready to coat the fruit
You can also replace with other type of fruits eg strawberry, berries & etc! This is also a great snack for a party, all kids will love this!
Happy Trying !!

Hi Sonia! My parents taken the candy in China many years ago. They commented it was too sweet for them. hahah! I myself never tasted one, but I don't like sweet thing anyway. :)
Sonia, I haven't try this before because the thick coated sugar puts me off. But if this is the homemade one, I may give it a go.

mm waht nice and yummy look these!!
I was in Beijing last year and saw they are using lots of fresh fruit to do this 冰糖葫芦
When we were living in Beijing some years ago, this candied fruit sticks were the only tid-bits that I can eat as I know it's made from sugar and fruits. They rest were a bit dodgy to me..lol!I love the one using kiwifruit and grapes. With the same method, you can even coat asam boi ( shin mui )and make it into sweets.
So interesting, I have never tried it. They are such a pretty snack.
I have tasted these before and yes, they were delicious!
Would love to try these one day.
Looks very delicious!

Hi Sonia, Looks delicious. You're an excellent cook. 2 thumbs up for you.
Have a nice day.
Why stirring is not necessary when cooking the sugar?
We tried this with strawberries in Beijing several years ago. Sweet and kids like it! Yours looks wonderful! Have a nice day!
相信小朋友一定会很喜欢的。很心动了。
I LOVE to eat this but I've never tried them with tomatoes before..sounds interesting. hehe. Enjoy the rest of your day, Sonia!
Choi Yen, Stirring or jostling of any kind can cause the sugar to begin crystallizing, see a link here-http://www.exploratorium.edu/cooking/candy/sugar.html
At my first glance, I thought it is real Tang hulu! With a closer look...I then realise they are tomatoes and grapes... You are great creating this disillusion.
This is very easy snack! I never coated vegetable/fruits with caramel sauce. Very interesting concept and I bet kids will eat this happily!
Wow, I bet all the kids will love this!
J'ai noté. A tester dès que nous aurons de bonnes tomates cerises.
A très bientôt
