Stuffed Arrowroots 酿慈菇

I don't know why we only able to buy arrowroots during Chinese New Year? when i saw supermarket flooded with arrowroots this time, remind me of the yummy deep fried arrowroot crips. But i am a bit lazy to deep fry it, so this time i try to cook to a savoury dish..

First time using this scoop gadget bought from Ikea many years ago, and found out it was very easy to scoop out the arrowroot flesh..

But i concluded that I prefer arrowroot crips more than this dish, hehehe..Perhaps it is because I have changed the original recipe which asked to deep fry instead of steaming method , and the taste is rather bland as I like food in stronger taste ^_^..

Stuffed Arrowroot
(recipe source: inspired by Flavours lifestyle magazine, with modification)

8 large arrowroots, peeled, leaving pointy shoots on top

Fish paste
80g mackerel flesh
20g fresh shrimps
IMG_5824 copy 1/2tsp salt
1/2tsp sugar
Pepper

Method
1. Chop fish flesh and shrimps till firm and gluey (alternative blend with food processor)
2. Mix with seasonings.

To steam stuffed Arrowroot
1. Rinse the peeled arrowroots and scoop out the flesh from the bottom.
2. Stuff arrowroot with fish paste
3. Arrange on a steaming tray and steam for 25mins.

Sauce
Gravy from steaming arrowroot
1 garlic, chopped
1/2tbsp oyster sauce
1/2tsp dark soy sauce
1/3cup water
Thicken mixture (1tbsp tapioca flour +2tbsp water)

Method
1. Heat the oil and sauté garlic till aroma.
2. Add in all the sauce ingredients and cook till boil.
3. Add in thicken mixture and mix well.

To serve- Arrange the steamed stuffed arrowroots on a plate and pour sauce over. Serve hot.

Do you know we can also plant arrowroots? just soak them in water. After few weeks, you can see nice green leaves growing up.. I will update new picture once they have green leaves..A very nice decoration item for CNY..try it out..

I was so lucky that in this trip, my mum's neighbour daughter made us the arrowhead chips. It was William's 1st time of eating and he said he can keep eating it with some old beer, haha! It's the season, isn't it? Easy to grow or not? We can't get arrowheads here, sigh! This is a new dish to me. My memory of arrowhead is just the chips, didn't realise that you can prepare like this way, I like it!

I am not a big fan of arrowroots but I don't mind having the chips. My mom too will plant the arrowroot every year in low large bowl. They look really nice.

I have never eaten arrowroot before (except for chips), didn't know it can be prepared in this way. Maybe after steaming can put on a thick sauce for extra flavour?

can fried instead of steam?
